Changing perceptions of older people

DPS Publishing recently wrote about a grant that had been won by Assistant Professor Gabrielle Brand, UWA lecturer and researcher, in collaboration with Professor Christopher Etherton-Beer, Associate Professor Rosemary Saunders and Assistant Professor Helen Dugmore.

The grant was received from the WA Nurses Memorial Centre Charitable Trust to evaluate the use of photographs as a teaching and learning tool with a group of UWA medical and nursing students.

This research will examine if pictures can help nursing and medical students begin to ‘see' older people in a different light.

The researchers believe the photographs will provide nurses and medical students with a clearer understanding of the person’s life. They will view photos of the patient in their stronger years, through their achievements and challenges. They hope that the photos will spark more meaningful conversations, develop stronger connections, increase respect and improve patient’s quality of life.

Fashion through the decades!

JewishCare's Aged Care Work Team loves the work of a Annalisa Hartlaub who is a16-year-old American University student who decided to created a series of photos that sent her back in time to flaunt some of the most notable fashions of the last century.

                                       http://www.boredpanda.com/fashion-history-culture-counterculture-annalisa-hartlaub/
Annalisa's pictures range from the 1930's and every decade up until 2010.
Besides her careful attention to makeup, detail, and historical fashion sense Annalisa also made sure that the images themselves would all look like photographs from their respective eras.

This project gives us the opportunity to examine decades of fashion evolution in a matter of minutes and come to truly appreciate just how much fashion diversity has changed over the eras.

When we read about this charming project it stated "Have you ever wondered what you might have looked like as a hippie in the 70s or as a flapper in the roaring 20s" and we realised that many of our clients don't have to imagine as they most likely followed some of these fantastic trends!

We hope these photos bring back some memorable memories for you.

Our Trip to the Blue Mountains

Our Mental Health Staff members just returned from the BLUE MOUNTAINS with some of our clients.

It was a wonderful trip which promoted positive wellbeing, created a sense of independence and responsibility, and, above all it was a chance to connect with nature, develop new friendships, and empower our clients to create meaning in their daily lives!!!

We spent a lovely two and a half days up in the Mountains. Staying at Katoomba, we had access to a number of different beautiful towns and villages and took hikes down Wentworth Falls, went to Echo Point to see the Three Sisters, and up on Sunset Rock in Mount Victoria to watch the sunset.

Our clients loved every minute of the trip! We were in a relaxing supportive environment where everyone was able to make good conversations, enjoy dinner over a BBQ and play pool with the locals.

We visited the town of Leura , where we drank delicious hot chocolate in the local cafes, and we all loved experiencing the culture of the small village in this Autumn time. We took amazing photographs overlooking the entire mountains at sunset - every one of our clients agreed was that the trip was certainly an experience they will take with them for the rest of their lives.

This Mental Health Initiative was a chance for the staff to promote positive wellbeing for every individual and collectively as a group.

It was a great success with such positive feedback - Stay tuned for more pictures, or visit our Jewish Care Facebook Page!!
