Wishing all a happy Pesach :)

The Aged Case Work Team would like to wish you and your family a Pesach filled with happiness

Tuesday, 19 March 2013

The need for the change to the disability sector was identified and reported through a Productivity Commission inquiry about care and support for a person with disability.

The inquiry report described the current disability support system as "underfunded, unfair, fragmented and inefficient". Therefore, recommended the establishment of a new, improved system, the NDIS in 2012.

The Federal government have taken the initiative to implement the recommendations of the report, allocating a one billion dollar budget.

The underpinning principals of the NDIS are to create a Person Centred support system which in turn will empower people with disability to make choices for their own lives now and in the future.
The new system will run collaboratively with state governments offering a consistent and fair support system across Australia.
In reality this means that people with disability and their families will have control over their funding and will be able to choose what services they would like to utilise. The supported living fund will enable this to happen. This was rolled out at the beginning of 2012 and 100 individuals have been allocated funding. The next allocation will be mid of 2013.

This will have no impact on support staff but will give individuals and their family the opportunity to really take control over their lives!!

Facing Depression with a new sense of technology

We all see how quickly technology is transpiring in front of our very eyes. Often, we are left wondering why, where or how a particular technological tool has been created.

However, now with the help of a smartphone or tablet, a program monitors "patients while they view images and video clips that commonly elicit certain emotional responses from people, and analyses their voices during interviews, and delivers a diagnosis based on the patient's reactions."
The University of Canberra's Professor Roland Goecke worked with the Black Dog Institute to develop a breakthrough technique in depression diagnosis. Photo: Melissa Adams

The technology, once improved and fine-tuned would “help doctors determine an appropriate treatment program for patients.”

21 March 2013 marks the 8th anniversary of World Down Syndrome Day, a global awareness day which has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012. Each year the voice of people with Down syndrome, and those who live and work with them, grows louder. But there is still so much more we can do.
Down Syndrome International is inviting everyone across the world to wear LOTS OF SOCKS on 21 March 2013 to raise awareness on World Down Syndrome Day.

"We want to get people talking about World Down Syndrome Day on 21 March, and we can do this if we all wear socks…but not just any socks…brightly coloured socks, mismatched socks, long socks, printed socks, 1 sock…maybe even 3 socks (or EXTRA socks) for 3 chromosomes. Just so long as they are socks which are on display and people will ask you about.... The choice is yours, but we ask you to join us in wearing something which will help tell everyone about World Down Syndrome Day. It is easy to do, so whether you are at home, school, university, work, play, travel, holiday or anywhere, join in!"

Check out the World Down Syndrome Day website for more information:

JewishCare working with other providers of aged services
With limited community resources available it is important that all providers in our community work together to avoid unnecessary duplication of services.

JewishCare has been working with COA and Burger Centre to provide information to older members of the community to ensure they are aware of what activities are being offered throughout the week.  Thousands of copies of last year’s Calendar of Senior Activities from Sunday to Friday were distributed and we plan to do the same again this year. These will be available online and in hard copy.
