2014 International Recognition of JewishCare NSW

We received international recognition for our ‘inclusion’ work for people with a disability, when the USA based Ruderman Foundation awarded us a $US 50,000 award. The award relates to the fact that 30% of links in the Big Brother Big Sister program involved a Little with a disability. We were very proud that this award received international media attention.

The Big Brother Big Sister program was involved in an attempt to record a Guinness Book of Records World Record for the numbers in a 3 legged race. This was part of the 321 project.

During the year, our Mental Health and Wellbeing program was heavily involved in Mental Health Month and partnered with many other organisations and participated in 7 community events. It also hosted the interagency meeting on the 1st October with a talk by Professor Mitchell.

JewishCare hosted the inaugural Jewish Youth Interagency in August, with members from 7 different Jewish organisations attending. These included JewishCare, Kids Giving Back, Shalom College, Jewish House, Shalom Institute, Mandelbaum House, and The Friendship Circle. Future joint educational events and networking opportunities are planned.

The 2014 White Ribbon Day Men's Breakfast in November, which aims to reduce domestic violence was the biggest ever with over 120 attendees listening to guest speaker Michael Flood.

JewishCare played its role in the Shabbat Project by hosting its largest Shabbat dinner for the Mental Health and Wellbeing program.

JewishCare continued to help hundreds of older members of the community to stay in their own homes. JewishCare's close ties with The Claims Conference also continue to help Holocaust Survivors especially as the guidelines for help change.

A new Friendship Club for active older people in Maroubra is in the process of being established at the Maroubra Synagogue.

Skin Cancer Action Week 16th-22nd November 2014

As we head into summer, National Skin Cancer Action Week provides a timely reminder for Australians about the importance of staying SunSmart to reduce their risk of skin cancer.

Two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the time they reach 70 and around 2000 Australians die of skin cancer each year.

This year’s slogan is Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek, and Slide.

The Cancer Council Australia are asking all Australians to slip on some sun protective clothing, slop on some SPF30+ (or higher) sunscreen, slap on a hat, seek shade, and slide on some sunglasses.

A combination of these measures, along with getting to know your skin and regularly checking to pick up on any changes are the keys to reducing your skin cancer risk: http://www.cancertas.org.au/event/national-skin-cancer-action-week/

If you notice any changes in your skin or have any questions regarding this topic remember to always speak to your GP about it.

When you do venture out remember to:
-Seek shade
-Wear sun protective clothing that covers as much of your body as possible
-Put on a broad-brimmed hat that shades your face, neck and ears
-Wear wrap-around sunglasses
-Apply SPF30+ broad spectrum water resistant sunscreen liberally to clean, dry skin, at least 20 minutes before being exposed to the sun, and reapply at least every two hours when outdoors
-Carry a bottle of water

The Cancer Council Australia has given young and older citizens the opportunity to tell their personal stories of skin cancer and how it has impacted on their lives through 'Your Summer. Your Skin. Your Story.' Program. These stories will be a reminder to all of us that sun protection saves lives.

Have you heard of JewishCare’s Links Program for seniors?

JewishCare commenced its Links Program in July 2006 on the North Shore and in the Eastern Suburbs to connect local volunteers with older members of the community.

The support is usually by way of regular one on one activities which may include:

· Help with correspondence
· Reading
· Going for a walk

· Playing games e.g. Chess or scrabble

JewishCare's Aged Case Work Team often refers older people who are isolated, lonely and in need of a friendly chat to brighten up their day.

White Ribbon Day

White Ribbon Day is a global initiative to stop violence against woman.
Over the last 7 years on (or around) 25 November JewishCare in Sydney has held a White Ribbon Day Men's Breakfast.

This year we are fortunate to have Dr Michael Flood who is an internationally renowned advocate on males, masculinity, and violence prevention as the keynote speaker.

Dr Michael Flood's research and advocacy on issues such as domestic violence, male sexuality and pornography has attracted many admirers. He is the Research Fellow, Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society, Health Sciences Faculty, La Trobe University.

At any one time JewishCare has around 20 families who are being supported by the staff in the Domestic Violence program.

The success of the campaign has been helped by the approach of engaging 'ambassadors' who promote it amongst their peers and family.

We invite you to attend our men's breakfast on:

When: Tuesday 25 November 2014

Time:
7:45am for 8am start

Where:
3 Saber Street Woollahra
